Ministry Of Sound – Anthems: Electronic 80s (3CD) (Split Tracks)

This album charts the birth of synthesised pop music in the 1980s and ultimately the roots of contemporary electronic dance music. The importance and continued popularity of 80s pop is not to be underestimated, and the emergence of serious synthesised music producers in Kraftwerk, The Human League, Heaven 17, The B.E.F., OMD, Yazoo, Ultravox, Talk Talk, Japan, Devo, Sparks, Gary Numan, New Order and The Pet Shop Boys, all of whom massively pushed the boundaries in experimenting with (mainly) Roland synths in this era, ultimately showed the way for the house and techno producers of the 90s to the present day. Within this more serious side there was also some brilliant, pure synth – pop from The Thompson Twins, Scritti Politti, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Thomas Dolby, Simple Minds, Propaganda, Erasure, China Crisis, Belouis Some, The Lotus Eaters, A Flock Of Seagulls, Howard Jones, Blancmange and The Associates. As with the 2 preceding Anthems releases we have cherry picked a mix of the biggest commercial tracks in addition to the most important and influential ones making it a truly fantastic collector’s package and thoroughly entertaining listen. The TV creative promises to be truly epic, proper hairs on the back of the neck stuff.

The importance and continued popularity of 80s pop is not to be underestimated, and the emergence of serious synthesised music producers in Kraftwerk, The Human League, Heaven 17, The B.E.F., OMD, Yazoo, Ultravox, Talk Talk, Japan, Devo, Sparks, Gary Numan, New Order and The Pet Shop Boys, all of whom massively pushed the boundaries in experimenting with (mainly) Roland synths in this era, ultimately showed the way for the house and techno producers of the 90s to the present day. Within this more serious side there was also some brilliant, pure synth – pop from The Thompson Twins, Scritti Politti, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Thomas Dolby, Simple Minds, Propaganda, Erasure, China Crisis, Belouis Some, The Lotus Eaters, A Flock Of Seagulls, Howard Jones, Blancmange and The Associates. As with the 2 preceding Anthems releases we have cherry picked a mix of the biggest commercial tracks in addition to the most important and influential ones making it a truly fantastic collector’s package and thoroughly entertaining listen. The TV creative promises to be truly epic, proper hairs on the back of the neck stuff.

Guy Gerber
Tel Aviv-based dance music producer Guy Gerber, who incorporates the best aspects of progressive house/trance, deep house, and techno into a unique style of his own, established himself as a rising star in 2004 with “Stoppage Time,” a popular release by Bedrock Records that opened the door to a high-profile recording contract with Cocoon Recordings soon thereafter. Growing up in Israel, Gerber grew up playing soccer. By the time he’d reached his mid-teens, though, he’d found a new passion: music, in particular seminal English-language alternative rock bands of the ’80s like Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, the Cure, and Joy Division. He himself took up playing the guitar as a result. His tastes quickly extended beyond ’80s alt rock, and he developed an affection for a variety of music, from the Beach Boys and the Beatles, to Kraftwerk and Chic, to Curtis Mayfield and Jimi Hendrix, to Iggy Pop and the Velvet Underground. He also got into electronic dance music, with such figureheads as Richie Hawtin, Laurent Garnier, and Carl Craig cited as key influences of his. Gerber made his debut as a producer in 2002 with releases on the British labels Alternative Route and Whoop!

09 the whole is on my side The Phantom Band releases Checkmate Savage January 27th, 2009 on Glasgow label Chemikal Underground. Recorded in Glasgow at the labels own Chem 19 and then in Franz Ferdinands Govan facility, this record features Paul Savage of The Delgados as producer, engineer, and guiding force. The recording sessions were like their early jams: long, meandering and experimental the band beating out rhythms on broken wood blocks and organist Andys shelvaphones, a home-made instrument created from metal shelf brackets.This early contender for album of the year is a place where Beefheart meets Bonnie Prince Billy,
where Neu! meets Nick Cave. When you have been playing together for a good while youd be amazed at the breadth of music you come up with. We ended up playing stuff that was folk, pop, techno with guitars, classic rock, metal, noise terrorism, gospel, soundscapes and parodied every band that we hated as well – it was great fun, says bassist Gerry of their prolonged sessions.The end result is truly special, bringing to mind the beat savvy of The Beta Band, the other-worldliness of Super Furry Animals and the mood of Hallowed Ground-era Violent Femmes.If it sounds like theyre hard to pin down, thats the idea. They called themselves The Phantom Band after a period of switching their identity with each successive gig, performing as Wooden Trees, Robert Redford and more. Early photos of the band pictured them with bags over their heads. Its all part of their mystery and sense of the bizarre: some shows have seen them play with a giant, smoke breathing wolf head, others, with a Stairmaster onstage so audience members can work-out during their set.In addition to The Phantom Band, the individual members each make music in other projects and guises, some better known than others. A few of them have an offshoot band called Omnivore Demon, a costumed improv group that play mostly at exhibitions and art events while Rick does solo folk stuff under the name of Rick Redbeard. Each Phantom brings a strong sense of identity to the project, counting artists, social workers, librarians and lawyers in their ranks. Never short of ideas and opinions, the entire band take a key interest in the album artwork, posters and onstage visuals that all add to this extraordinary bands immersive world. Checkmate Savage is releasing January 27th, 2009 on Chemikal Underground.
